Raw data does not lie. But collection methods vary, interpretations require background knowledge, and communication needs a hook. Every time it snows in 2020, some people around the world will argue that this definitively disproves global warming. How does accurate and important scientific data in the laboratory turn into jumbled misunderstandings discussed by the general public on the commuter train? In this panel discussion, students, faculty, and industry and media personnel will consider how chemical research is transformed and simplified when presented to other scientists and the general public. Audience members from all areas of chemistry research and communication are encouraged, and audience participation is welcome.
